A curated exhibition of works on paper around notions of the indexical in mark making..

"Social indexicality in the human realm has been regarded as including any sign (clothing, speech variety, table manners) that points to, and helps create, social identity." wikipedia,

The interpretation for this curatorial project is to acknowledge and accentuate these traits through artists mark making..

also thinking about notions of the artist's fingerprint [which in this situation is the works on paper which I find to be a form of intimacy with the artist] representing their personality and philosophy..

Andy Warhol's definition of indexicality is "the artist direct physical relationship with the art object".

Exhibited works by: Alex Cuffe, Alrey Batol, Ben Wattenberg, Caitlin Franzmann, Hayato, Laura Hill, Leif Gifford, Linus Wattenberg, Matt Earl, Melanie Simpson, Michael Candy, Nadege Phillipe Janon, Nick McGovern, Rohan Holiday, Sarah Byrne, Skye McNichol, Tim McConnachie, Will Charlton and XinO

"For a large space, very little has been added to the Vanguard room by myself. By presenting little I am hoping that viewers (as well as myself) will gain more, possibly by envisioning further possibilities with the space; whether it's in the figurative style that I've used here or in another visual attitude.

Context plays an enormous role in how we perceive something. When I first saw the Vanguard room, my immediate thoughts were how my work would operate in the context of the space and what the space itself offered. I was drawn to the portion of wall painted a brilliant red and the block areas of white and white lines provided by the electrical conduit cords and white hanging rails that divide the expanses of beige wall. My first decision was to create something (on a small budget) that responded to the visual characteristics of the space rather than showcasing existing work. My second decision was to utilise silhouettes.

Creating silhouettes has numerous benefits for myself:

  1. Cardboard & paper are inexpensive
  2. I enjoy illustration & storytelling (fan of fantasy and escapism)
  3. As silhouettes provide just the outline & mass of an object, I feel they can leave a lot up to the imagination."
